TUNIS, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian President Kais Saied welcomed Syria's reintegration into the Arab League (AL), said a presidency statement on Friday.

Saied made the remarks during his meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on the sidelines of the 32nd AL Summit, which is underway in the Saudi city of Jeddah with the participation of Arab leaders to discuss regional and global issues.

Al-Assad attended the summit for the first time since his country was suspended from the membership of AL after the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011.

During their meeting, Saied expressed his hope that Syria recover its influence and get rid of foreign interference.

The two presidents discussed Tunisian-Syrian relations and the need to further strengthen them, according to the presidency statement.

For his part, Al-Assad spoke to the state television Wataniya1 that he was absolutely convinced of Tunisia's support for Syria.

On April 12, Tunisia and Syria decided to reopen their respective embassies to resume diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Tunisia severed its diplomatic relations with Syria in February 2012 after the Syrian civil war broke out. ■
