RAMALLAH, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Palestine recorded on Wednesday 330 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number in the Palestinian territories since March 5 to 3,095.

Among the new cases were 248 in the southern West Bank district of Hebron, while 2,450 patients are receiving medical care at various medical centers across the West Bank, said Health Minister Mai al-Kaila in a press statement.

A total of 634 have recovered from the deadly virus and 11 are under intensive care, including three on respirators, according to the minister.

Hebron, the largest district in the West Bank, has become the epicenter of the new coronavirus wave that hit the region in mid-June, followed by Nablus in the northern West Bank.

This epidemic resurgence comes mainly as a result of contacts with Palestinians from inside Israel or workers in Israel, according to medical experts.

Meanwhile, Ibrahim Milhem, spokesman of the Palestinian government, announced in a news briefing that the government decided to impose a lockdown on all West Bank districts for five days starting Friday.

Public transportation will completely stop to break the chain of coronavirus, said Milhem.

But pharmacies, supermarkets and bakeries will open 12 hours a day, he added.

The government may extend the lockdown depends on the development of the epidemic, the spokesman noted.
